La fête des grands-mères, the perfect match between grandmas and flowers

24 February 2024

In France, there is a special holiday that celebrates grandmothers: la fête des grands-mères. The celebration will take place this year on Sunday, 3 March. And research shows that – among young people in particular – flowers are the preferred gift to give grandmothers. To ensure suitable bouquets, the Flower Council of Holland is highlighting inspirational sample bouquets that refer to the 50s, 60s and 70s - the time when grandmas were young.

Flowers continue to be the preferred gift
Research firm OpinionWay conducted a survey among a representative sampling of over a thousand French people over the age of 18. The results speak for themselves. Two-thirds of respondents stated that Grandmother’s Day is the perfect occasion to show grandma how much she is appreciated. Among young people under the age of 25, this percentage was even 75%. The responses clearly showed that today’s grandmothers have definitely kept up with the times, but one thing has not changed, namely that flowers continue to be the most popular gift to give to your grandma. No fewer than 78% are firmly convinced of this. Among grandmothers, a whopping 93% are certain that their peers prefer to receive flowers on Grandmother’s Day. The belief that flowers have a unique language that connects people and conveys emotions is still very much alive among French grandmothers and young gift-givers.

Back in time
The unique quality of flowers will be communicated via social media, including beautiful pictures of bouquets that were all the rage in the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s – inspired by music styles such as disco and New Wave. These are the decades when grandmas were young and learned to love flowers. It’s hard to imagine a more fitting gift for Grandmother’s Day!
