Exposé #24: Mathilde Karrèr
Photographer, adventurer and flower worshipper
In the latest edition of Exposé, we put the spotlight on the maker of our Exposé videos herself: photographer Mathilde Karrèr. Matilda is sometimes described as “the photographer who really wanted to be a florist”. This idiosyncratic and internationally renowned still-life photographer - who also works for titles and brands like Vogue Italia, Glamour and Montblanc - has had a soft spot for flowers throughout her life, and they often play the leading role in the eclectic creations that she captures on film.
In a lengthy interview we find out all about Mathilde: why she dropped out of art school as a teenager, exactly how her creative process comes about, and why she’s so crazy about flowers. Because those flowers constantly recur in the images that she creates. Whether they’re draped around a shoe, or play the starring role in a psychedelic mash-up: with Mathilde you can always find a flower somewhere.
Varied collection
If there’s one thing that defines Mathilde’s work, it’s her eclectic style. It’s very diverse, eye-catching and colourful, and consists of many different elements.
Flowers don’t listen
Working with flowers is fun, but also challenging. Mathilde says: “I keep asking myself: is it heading in the right direction? Does the piece need something else? That conversation goes on all the time. Flowers do make that dialogue challenging, because they don’t always listen. Flowers start to droop and shift at a certain moment that makes the piece look different than I had conceived. Sometimes I think ‘oh, that’s lovely - I’ll use that’, and sometimes it means I get stuck. But often when I see the image again later, I am still happily surprised by the result.”
